G’day mates! Billy here from Barry’s Backyard
Just a quick one for all you green thumbs out there!
If you could jump in a time machine and give your younger gardening self a list of the top 5 tools you must have to kick off your garden journey right — what would be on it?
Here are mine:
1. A good pair of gloves
Trust me, your hands will thank you. A solid pair of gardening gloves protects you from splinters, thorns, blisters, and all the nasty surprises hidden in the soil. Plus, no one wants dirt permanently under their nails!
2. Secateurs
Not just one, but two! (or three haha)
– A heavier-duty pair for trimming back thicker branches and getting your plants in shape
– A smaller pair for snipping herbs, harvesting veggies, and keeping everything neat
3. Hose timer
This little gadget is a lifesaver during the NT dry season. It takes the guesswork out of watering, keeps your garden on a schedule, and gives your plants the consistency they need – even if you’re not home!
4. A good hose nozzle with different spray settings
You want gentle for seedlings, strong for cleaning tools or blasting pests, and everything in between. A nozzle with multiple spray settings makes watering efficient and way more satisfying.
5. A trowel/small shovel
Perfect for planting, transplanting, digging through mulch or compost, and getting right into those raised garden beds. You’ll reach for this more than you think!
BONUS TOOL: Headphones!
Let’s be honest — a good playlist, a true crime podcast, or some Aussie rock makes any gardening session ten times better. Life’s just better with a soundtrack.
What are YOUR top 5 must-have tools for the garden? Drop them in the comments — I’d love to hear what made your list!
