How I Built 3 IBC Wicking Beds in Darwin
These beds are perfect for our hot NT climate—low maintenance, water-saving, and great for growing veggies all year round. Here’s how I did it
Step 1: Cut the IBCs
I cut three 1000L IBC tanks in half (just below the halfway point) and left them in their metal cages for strength.
Step 2: Build the Reservoir
I laid slotted ag pipe in a spiral on the base and filled around it with drainage rock (about 25–30cm deep). This holds the water for wicking.
Step 3: Add an Overflow
Drilled a hole just above the rock line—this stops it from overfilling during heavy rain or watering.
Step 4: Wicking Layer
Added a thick layer of coarse sand on top of the rocks. This draws water up into the soil above.
Step 5: Organic Matter
I chucked in some garden waste—leaves, twigs, compost scraps—as a buffer layer before the soil.
Step 6: Premium Soil
Topped it all off with a rich garden soil blend. Ready for planting!
